Honorary Consultant in Occupational Lung Disease and Asthma

Jo is an Honorary Respiratory Consultant in occupational lung disease and asthma at Royal Brompton Hospital and Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College.
Her research is primarily focused on the respiratory heath of working populations including firefighters and individuals exposed to silica. She has been awarded funding to establish a UK Silicosis Registry. She is clinical advisor to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Respiratory Health (silicosis). She is a member of the Group of Occupational Respiratory Disease Specialists (GORDS) and recent Chair of the British Thoracic Society Occupational and Environmental Lung Disease Specialist Advisory Group (2021-2024).

Dr Patrick Howlett
MRC Clinical Research Fellow (National Heart and Lung Institute)

Patrick is a Medical Research Council (MRC) PhD Clinical Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and is a Respiratory Registrar in Northwest London. His main research interest is occupational and infectious lung disease, particularly among small-scale and informal miners. His current PhD project is titled: Silicosis and Tuberculosis among small-scale miners in Northern Tanzania (SilicoTB). The project is a cross-sectional and cohort study investigating the burden and determinants of silicosis and tuberculosis among a group of Tanzanite gemstone miners. His previous work includes understanding the spirometry determinants of respiratory infection in children, and describing the clinical features of Ebola Virus Disease.
Professor Joanna Szram
Consultant in Occupational Lung Disease

Professor Jo Szram trained and worked in Cambridge, Peterborough, Leicester, Nottingham and London.
She is a consultant respiratory physician specialising in occupational lung disease at Royal Brompton Hospital and honorary senior clinical lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. She has been Postgraduate Dean for Kent, Surrey and Sussex since July 2022 and is currently co-chair of the UK’s Medical and Dental Recruitment Service (MDRS) Recruitment Group. She previously worked as a clinical advisor for the national NHS medical education reform programme, leading on the enhance (Enhancing Generalist Skills) and Flexible Portfolio Training (FPT) programmes. Jo was Chair of Medical Education Leaders UK from 2020-22 and was at the forefront of the rebranding initiative from NACT UK.
Jo was Royal College of Physicians’ Linacre Fellow from 2020-22, a role focused on the development and leadership of the RCP’s network of college tutors and associate college tutors, linking their work to that of the Medical Students and Foundation Doctors network, Trainees and New Consultants Committees.
Her work on the editorial board of the RCP’s Future Healthcare Journal provided the opportunity to influence the evolution of the publication as a way to empower all, particularly early career healthcare professionals, to demonstrate what they have learnt, and spread and share their knowledge widely.

Tamanna Kabir
Clinical Nurse Specialist in Occupational Lung Disease

Tamanna Kabir is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Occupational Lung Disease at the Royal Brompton Hospital. She works with patients and the multidisciplinary team to run the weekly occupational lung disease clinic. She carries out nursing assessments including lung function tests (spirometry, FeNO and peak flow measurements) and skin prick testing, and also provides education and training for both patients and colleagues in occupational lung disease.
Tamanna has a background in community nursing, communications in the charity sector, and a previous undergraduate degree in Psychology.
