The Lungs At Work team and lung transplantation specialists from Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals held an information event for patients and their families on Friday 17th July 2026.
There is no cure for the silicosis but for some patients lung transplantation may be an option, and it is a daunting prospect for many. The event, the first of its kind at the hospital, was a chance for patients and their loved ones to learn and ask questions about silicosis due to artificial stone and lung transplantation. They were also able to meet and speak with a patient who had undergone lung transplantation for the same condition.
The patients were also able to meet key members of the wider healthcare team on the day, including the occupational lung disease and silicosis team (consultant Dr Jo Feary, clinical nurse specialist Tamanna Kabir and research nurse Rayma Barros Howe) and the lung transplant team (lung transplant and respiratory medicine consultant Dr Kavita Dave, transplant surgeon Mr Mo Osman, and transplant coordinators Karen Young and Polly Flaxman).
The event was a great success, and gave patients a platform to speak with peers and share their concerns and experiences in a safe, supported space.
