I work in the department as a full-time Clinical Research Fellow. I am dual-accredited in Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine. I continue to work as an Honorary Specialist Registrar at the Royal Brompton Hospital on an outpatient basis as well as pursuing my interest in medical education.

Clinical:

I undertake general respiratory and occupational respiratory outpatient clinics at the Royal Brompton Hospital, and help to manage specific bronchial challenges on individuals with suspected occupational allergic disease. I have input in the RAF/Armed Forces specialist respiratory clinics at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with Dr Gary Davies.

Current research interests:

  • Occupational causes and employment consequences of airway disease (Asthma and COPD) in adult life in the UK.

  • I am currently conducting a study examining the relationship between occupation and asthma in an adult population, recruiting 9000 adults with asthma through general practice, in collaboration with Education for Health. We aim to ascertain the proportion (frequency) of asthma attributable to occupation in the UK population as well as any regional variations in this effect. This project is funded by the Royal Brompton and Harefield Charitable Trust.

  • A second study, funded by the Colt Foundation, is examining the impact of respiratory symptoms, COPD and airflow obstruction (FEV1) on present and future employment in 51-60 year olds in Kent through initial cross-sectional study with the subsequent generation of a cohort for longitudinal follow up.

  • Systematic reviews of welding and lung function decline (in collaboration with the Welding Institute) and outcome of occupational asthma on continuing exposure.

  • Outcome of pre-employment assessment of firefighters and RAF recruits.
